Ah! Hollywood depicting men and women as sexual adversaries and incomprehensible to each other, men get a pretty easy ride in Hollywood!)
Sad about phillip seymour hoffman, liked him in the hunger games
Thank God for those things that remind you of some realities; the things that matter and are irreplaceable, family and health for example. I say this because a close friend of mine had an operation this, week and because of that I had to spend some time in the hospital. You saw people in various states of health and demeanour, noticing that some people hardly received visitors and the attitude of the visitors on the patients. The nurses had seemingly developed a matter-of-fact and upbeat attitude to most things.
There was an interesting conference by The Deen Institute titled Can Muslims Escape Misogyny?’
It had some good ideas about: recognising the role and recognition of the differences in eastern and western culture, the socio/political realities that influenced the classical scholars that set a lot of precedents in Islam. Examining critically classical Islamic viewpoints, examining critically, the means and ends to western societal ideals. The idea of women as a ‘fitna’(tribulation/temptation). The dearth in Islamic scholarship now vs then-a book on this I heard about is Almuhadithaat by Akram Nadwi of Oxford. Ideas about encouraging women victims of sexual violence to speak out. Not going from one extreme of oversexualisation to seeing women as just for procreation. Points about not looking at women just as victims, we are all producers and consumers and may be contributing to other forms and levels of oppression. Also the necessity for mosques to be open to women and play a social role. Finally some points about thinking for yourself and not accepting what any scholar says without reservation and developing a relationship with the Qur’aan

Some thoughts on the disturbing practice of female genital mutilation.
Seems like women’s views, rights, and roles are still a healthy battleground, (isn’t that what G W Bush used to justify making a mess in Afghanistan the second time? Throw bombs at the problem and it should go away…) While the Taliban and people like them are disgusting for their treatment and attitude towards women, I feel like the final solution will come when the faithful masses stand up to them and highlight the irreligious not just immoral nature of their actions.
Sigh. A lot of people are still asking can you be a Muslim Feminist?
Is it me but is there an over representation of stories that are basically, Look what these nutty Muslims do! Now here are some cats.
Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so – for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
